I grew up dancing from the time I was 4, through high school, college, as a job and made it my business as an adult.
Sitting in one place for a long period of time is hard for me. To be honest, I’ve never met a successful business owner that can sit still.
Like other business owners I love making lists. Todo lists, shopping lists, things that need to be done around the house lists… Lot’s of lists!!
Here was my problem, I would read every book, blog on how to get more done and follow it for a day or two and then bam I’m back at the end of my day looking at my long list of things todo and realizing that I failed (again) because I only crossed off two or three.
(and added more than I crossed off!)
It took me years to realize that I wasn’t failing, I was setting myself up for failure.
No way I was going to get everything done in one day!
Yes all those things were part of my problem but you want to know what my main one was…
I LOVE learning new things… so every time I was ready to complete project I would research the crap out of it.
Just when I thought I knew which program, system, app I was going to start using for the business, I would find another one!
That’s when my brain went from; I’m going to check this off my list today and implement this system to save me time…. To; Oooooh look at that new program and let me read the reviews, and awesome! They have a free trial. UGH!!!
I’m sure you know what happened next. Yep, nothing. I would spend the next week going down one rabbit hole after another trying to figure out which one was best.
And I would do that with everything!!! One Ooooooh Shiny moment after another and one rabbit hole after another.
Cut yourself some slack and try putting just 3 things on your list. Set a timer and give it 20 minutes so that if you get stuck going down a rabbit hole or you get distracted by the Ooooh Shiny ad that popped up while you were working you can get up and walk away when the 20 minutes are up.
If you start to give yourself little wins each day you will be able to eventually add more things to that list.
ACTION STEP - Pull out your list for tomorrow (I know you already have one) and pick the 3 things. Two of them are items that HAVE to get done and one of them is an item that you WANT to do. Don’t make yourself do only things that you have to do because it won’t feel like a win at the end of the day.
