Hey owners. I'm on today to talk about branding. A lot of the studios I know spend so much time on creating amazing logos, graphics, flyers and newsletters and all these things that we put so much time into. But are we keeping it consistent, are we keeping it simple? I am Jennifer Randall and I teach dance studio owners how to create word of mouth marketing on social media to increase engagement and enrollment.
Today, I'm going to go over branding. First of all, do you have any? Second of all, are you being consistent with your branding? and a third, are you using templates? I'm going to go over really quick why you should be using templates when you are putting together your branding every month. So when a parent or student or prospect comes to your website, comes through social media, comes into your building, are they going to see consistency? Is somebody scrolling on Facebook and Instagram instantly going to know that post came from your studio? They should. Here's the...
I grew up dancing from the time I was 4, through high school, college, as a job and made it my business as an adult.
Sitting in one place for a long period of time is hard for me. To be honest, I’ve never met a successful business owner that can sit still.
Like other business owners I love making lists. Todo lists, shopping lists, things that need to be done around the house lists… Lot’s of lists!!
Here was my problem, I would read every book, blog on how to get more done and follow it for a day or two and then bam I’m back at the end of my day looking at my long list of things todo and realizing that I failed (again) because I only crossed off two or three.
(and added more than I crossed off!)
It took me years to realize that I wasn’t failing, I was setting myself up for failure.
No way I was going to get everything done in one day!
How many people are seeing your business on a daily basis? Do you even know which advertising methods are working for you?
Walker by’s, drive by’s, mailers, value coupon books, there are so many and believe me I have tried them ALL!
I’m guessing you have too, which is why you are still reading!
Every small business owner knows that the best marketing is WORD OF MOUTH. Hands down every time.
For brick and mortar businesses it is all about getting people through the doors and nothing does that better than getting a referral from a friend.
That’s it, seems simple right? Well yes and no…
Everything evolves and as business owners we know that. From door hangers, to flyers at parades, to sites like Groupon and mass mailers. If you put any time into your business working on marketing you know how these things work for a while and then they fizzle out.
You know what never goes away… Word of Mouth. (It...
Buckle up because here comes another one of my rants.
I am what you call a workshop junkie. I love going to them, I love meeting other business owners, I love learning new marketing and trying to figure out how I was going to use it in my business.
So many times one of the classes, speakers, themes or exercises was, “How To Find Your Ideal Customer”.
Just like the good student I am, I would listen, do the exercise and go home with a worksheet completely filled out of who my IDEAL CLIENT was. Obviously on a workshop high I was so excited that I had finally cracked the code.
I would keep that momentum going for a couple weeks working on tweaking my marketing to match up with the very detailed person I created on that worksheet weeks ago. And then you guessed it… nothing happened.
It took me years to figure this next part out. (I’m giving it to you for free, no workshop fee required!)
WHO you THINK your ideal client...
Do you get an icky feeling when a brick and mortar asks you for your email or phone number?
I have to admit that when I was running my business if felt weird asking people who just walked in for their email address.
I don’t know why it was, it shouldn’t have been. I mean they came into MY business so they were there on their own free will, it wasn’t like I dragged them in and made them give it to me.
But for some reason small businesses feel like asking for emails or phone numbers is a BIG no,no.
So let me tell you what happened… I was listening to a podcast, watching some video from a coach or any number of FB groups I was stalking and learning from and it was like the universe was aligning.
They were all talking about how important it is to get emails and numbers. Yes, it was going to feel weird, Yes some people are going to have a very quick NO but, just keep doing it.
Here’s the part where it gets...
Okay maybe I'm the only one who feels this way but enough already!
Lately a lot of my social media feed is full of inspirational post. I get that for a split second it makes people feel good but how it is helping me take any action?
Don't get me wrong I enjoy the occasional uplifting post. But I'm busy and I'm sure you are too so it gets me going when I see pages with THOUSANDS of followers and post after post is telling me how great I am, DUH I already know that.
The whole idea of following leader, coaches, teachers, etc on social media is to learn from them, to gain tools to make the business run like a well oiled machine!
(I do have to give some credit to a couple of leaders/coaches that I follow that do give great content but they are becoming few and far between.)
Sorry this isn't a long post today, I am on a rant and just needed to let it out. It is the last day of April so guess what, here is your;
ACTIONABLE STEP - Take 30 minutes and figure out what your social media...
What FIRE are you putting out today? (or should I say how MANY)
STOP... do not let that issue take up any more of your brain space. Unless it's an ACTUAL fire, then obviously go put that out!
We are all guilty of this. We wake up thinking of all the things we need to get done and the first thing we do is check our email and there is ALWAYS an email/phone call of an issue that makes you want to scream.
Let this sink in for a minute... unless you work with life and death, that issue is not going to be the end of the world!
I get it is easier said than done because I WAS that person who was up at 3am because I can't sleep thinking of all the things I need to get done but then get sucked down the FIRE hole because I read an email from a VERY unhappy parent and they are going to withdraw their kid...and begin the downward spiral of me getting NOTHING done until I respond to that, hear back from the parent and talk to the staff about it!
Guess what??? It's now NOON and all...
I'm Jen and here's a little about me...
Since this is my first blog on my new site I thought I would take a hot minute to let you know a little bit about who I am and well... why I even have this site.
First the personal; I'm a mom of 3 kids (13 yr old girl & twin 11 yr olds (boy/girl)). I live in Sammamish, WA. I have a great partner (it's a man, just incase you were wondering, ha) and the most awesome dog (Lulu) ever. I can be super sarcastic and I get right to the point.
I started a dance studio in my 20's when I moved from Iowa to Washington. Dance was my passion growing up and when I moved to WA I worked for other studios for a while and decided it was time for me to start my own.
The first year I ended the session with 60 students and I grew the business from one dance room to 4, 2 music rooms, 400+ students and 12 staff in 15 years. It was for sure a business of love.
During the process of growing the studio I realized that I had a love for...
